1.They set boundaries

Employees must understand that there are rules that they must abide by and procedures that must be followed.  They must understand that failure to follow them has consequences.

2. Safety

One consequence of not having policies and procedures in place is that there is no safeguard in place to protect the employee from injury and that can result in penalties to the employer.

3. Scope of practice

Policies define the scope of the employees role so that they can understand their responsibilities.

4. Direction

Policies will help employees to understand and follow the expected standards of behaviour.

5. Time Efficiency

Policies and procedures guide when certain tasks should be completed – such as incidents must be reported within x amount of time of the incident occuring.

6. Fairness

Policies and procedures ensure that all employees have the same rules applied to each of them and that there is no favouritism.

7. Uniformity

If all employees are following the same policies and procedures then the quality of performance will be consistent.

8. Compliance

Policies and procedures ensure you are complying with Federal or State legistation relating to matters such as annual leave, work place health and safety and grievance handling.

9. Keeps the employer accountable

Policies and procedures provide transparency for leaders and what they expect.

10. Enables assessment of performance

When an employee is following the policies and procedures, they know what is expected of them.  They provide a clear benchmark for managing performance issues.
